English Festival is the undisputed highlight of the English Enhancement Program started at Shantou University in 2002. EF, student-run and student-oriented, combines a multitude of activities and provides a range of opportunities for students to participate. Activities include an opening night with performing arts, a speech contest with prepared and impromptu speeches, and a singing contest with solo, duet or group performances. Opportunities for students range from participating as a contestant to managing the stage lightning, from designing the choreography to welcoming the delegations from visiting universities, from serving as a lead organizer to enjoying the event as a content audience member. Whatever individual participants choose to do or be involved in, they will have a chance to put what they have learned in the classroom into practice, engage in meaningful interaction with fellow students, faculty and the larger university community, develop their language, interpersonal and intercultural competence, and demonstrate what they can achieve if given the chance.
